We’re thrilled to share the winners for the Class of 2020 Awards, who were recently announced in a webinar awards ceremony. We introduced 5 new awards this year following the news that GFW20 wouldn’t be able to go ahead. In June, a group of industry experts joined us to whittle down the finalists from 10 to 3 graduates for each award, picking only one winner from an incredibly talented selection this year.
We’re so excited to share that GFW19 Shein People’s Choice Award winner Mariah Esa has just launched a capsule collection with Browns! The De Montfort University graduate’s collection that won over the public was made from repurposed labels thrown away in the fast fashion industry. Esa sourced labels that were either over produced or classed as rejects in the fast fashion industry and transformed them into a base fabric by attaching them together.
For the second year running, we partnered with SmartFocus, the Digital Messaging Cloud, to give you a voice and the chance to award your favourite designer with an iPad and the opportunity to showcase at the GFW Houses of Parliament event in November.
Vivienne Westwood is the activist, punk and designer that has been revolting against the norm since the eighties. As one of our Lifetime Patrons, the iconic British creative was the perfect match to lend her name to an award we created in 2013, to recognise the growing need for sustainable design. In 2016 the award transformed from the Ethical Award to the Dame Vivienne Westwood Sustainable and Ethical Award.
On Wednesday the 17th January, GFW Alumni and winner of the TU Womenswear scholarship 2017, Laura Gillings, visited the TU clothing studio to introduce her stunning collection. The collection presents garments featuring Laura’s hand drawn prints, striped garments designed with ruffles to display a disorganised effect and statement slogans.
Recently returned from a three month trip around America, Megan Evans, is ready to enter the industry. As the winner of the YKK Accessories Award at Graduate Fashion Week 2017, her garments have been on display in the YKK showrooms in Shoreditch. The colourful embroidery and artistic illustration on the pieces makes seeing them up close, worthwhile the trip to East London. Her thirst and energy for fashion, art, design and sports is clear, and contagious. We caught up with the emerging designer to hear her thoughts about the changing industry, where her future lies and carving a space for art and fashion to collide.
Every year, Graduate Fashion Week celebrates the most extraordinary talents from UK and around the world, ushering them into spotlight as they take home the most prestigious awards given to graduates in fashion.
The Swarovski International Catwalk Competition took place on the final day of GFW and the audience spent the afternoon eagerly anticipating the winner announcement. As is always the case, it was difficult to bestow the award upon just one young designer, as the 32 university strong show, was refreshing, energetic and eye opening.
