Beginning with an inspirational video, Ralph Lauren’s careers talk was full of useful advice to help graduates get the best start in their careers.
Each of the panelists had a different career path which got them to where they are now. Giangiuli interned for the company in 1994, before returning as their talent acquisition. She stressed the importance of working in a variety of companies and positions, as it helps you learn the whole operation of how any business is run.
Armour began working in their retail stores, progressing onto VM and climbing his way up the company. Meanwhile, Jordan became their menswear designer after applying for a role and flying to New York to ask to show them his portfolio.
“Learn from every position” was one of Giangiuli’s most important tips. No matter which role you’re in, you can learn skills and gain experience that will help you progress in your career. “Be a sponge and soak it all up”, Jordan agreed. He went on to explain that the more you absorb from your surroundings and the more you help out, ask questions and be involved with every area of the company, the more you’ll learn and the quicker your career can progress.
Rob gave a rundown of his career, explaining how he went from retail assistant in the Ralph Lauren store and and worked his way up to becoming Creative Presentation Director.
Passion is one of the most important traits that anyone can have when trying to land your dream job. Whilst creativity, knowledge and skill are essential, passion is something that can’t be taught.
Research the brand before attending interviews, visit their stores and look at their customers to truly understand who the company is. The people around you will always be able to spot true passion for the brand, and, as Giangiuli said; “If you’re not going to love what you’re doing, you shouldn’t be doing it”.
