This weeks GFF Talent is Hannah Morley, a graduate of the Fashion Design course at the University of Central Lancashire. Hannah’s final collection, “Disco Ain’t Dead” is a celebration of the golden age of disco, and aims to remind us to have fun, let our hair down once in a while, and not take life too seriously.
What was the starting point of inspiration for your final project?
My main source of inspiration for my collection ‘Disco Ain’t Dead’ is the disco era, looking at Studio 54 and the iconic characters that went there. I’m giving my collection a personal twist by using my own work from a previous project as the silhouette inspiration with lots of metal hoops that I’ve woven yarn around to create a really stand-out aesthetic. The collection will be made up of 6 outfits, so roughly 18 garments.
How has it evolved from your initial ideas and what have you learnt along the way?
In the beginning, I had already known for a while that I wanted to use disco as my inspiration for final collection as I’m just obsessed with it! But I felt as disco is something that has been done time and time again on the catwalk, it was hard to come up with a way to make it different and exciting.
In semester 1, we did a project about experimental silhouettes which is where I found my woven hoop idea and I realised that this was what my collection needed that could make it really amazing. I’ve learnt that all you need to make a really exciting collection is just one good idea that you can then turn into so much more.
What is the message behind your project that you want people to take away?
I wouldn’t say my collection really has a poignant message as such, just that life is all about having fun. In this day and age, everyone is always really busy and caught up in themselves, sometimes we need to look back to the days of disco and let our hair down like they did!
What is your plan once you finish your BA?
When I finish university I’m hoping to find a job as a design assistant/junior designer and just dive straight into the industry. I’d love to work in Manchester as I really enjoyed my placement year there but to work in London or New York would be a dream.
