From Project Pitch to the Careers Quarter, here is everything you need to know
Graduate Fashion Week is fast approaching, and it is the prime time for students from member universities to showcase their talents. Graduate Fashion Week is also a great opportunity to learn more about the fashion industry, and connect with industry experts.
Graduate Fashion Week will return this June for its 35th anniversary with a string of events running throughout the week. Alongside the hotly anticipated Graduate Fashion Show, the Next Generation of Talent, and Project Pitch, you can visit the Careers Quarter to discuss your career goals, book into masterclasses, Live Talks, and workshops from industry voices.
Here is everything you need to know about all the goings on at The Truman Brewery next month…
Project Pitch
This year's Graduate Fashion Week will welcome a new initiative, and it's not one to miss.
Project Pitch encourages students to hone their communications, marketing, and presenting skills to feel confident pitching in a professional capacity, which will be hugely beneficial for any career. This initiative is set to take place on 17th June from 10 am to 5pm.
As part of this scheme, each student will be allocated a 15-minute slot to pitch their project to a panel of judges from the industry, which will be followed by a Q&A. Candidates who have been selected are allowed to bring props and items to support their pitch.
Following the pitching session, the judging panel will whittle down a winner who will receive expert mentoring, as well as an internship, which is a crucial step on the career ladder.
Each university can nominate up to 10 students for the project. However, students will need to submit their projects to pitch by May 15th to be considered, and successful candidates will be allocated their designated slots prior to the Project Pitch.
If you are interested in this opportunity, students can submit their work directly to their tutors who can nominate them for Project Pitch.
Careers Quarter
This Graduate Fashion Week will see a new initiative launch, the Careers Quarter.
The Careers Quarter will be a dedicated space at The Truman Brewery where final-year students can connect directly with professionals in the fashion industry. These one-to-one sessions will run for 15-minutes across the week, and it is open to all final-year graduates attending Graduate Fashion Week.
This section will allow students to discuss two topics out of six disciplines: Design, Media and Image, Comms, Marketing, Talent Hiring and PR and Brand. Each section will be led by an expert in that specific field, who you can ask any relevant questions to, receive honest feedback about your project, and make connections that could be career changing.
While spaces are available on the day, these are subject to availability. So, we recommend students register in advance to secure their space.
Prior to each session, students will receive a guide to ensure they get the most out of the day, and the insider discussions. Plus, attendees will receive a pack of resources with follow-up guidance and networking support. Let’s not forget, the Graduate Fashion Foundation also has a dedicated jobs section, as well as advice on pursuing a career in the fashion industry, to support your career journey.
Industry professionals will also receive a full briefing so they can be prepared for the discussions. So, if you are looking to support graduates and offer up insights on those disciplines, please contact Sabrina Perry (sabrina@graduatefashionweek.com).
The Graduate Fashion Week Live Talks
While the Graduate Fashion Show runs from 15th to 18th June, there will be Live Talks with industry experts and professionals throughout the week. These talks are a great way to ask experts questions about their career journey, advice on breaking the industry, and wider discussions on the changing face of fashion. Plus, it is a great way to network too.
The full catwalk schedule can be found here, while the programme for the GFW Live Talks will be updated in the coming weeks. So, bookmark 15th May for even more details.
