As my ideas developed through the creative draping process and feedback, some clear design themes developed that presented a clear connection to my inspiration from brutalist architecture, architectural decay, structure and transformation.
These were then applied through my looks and included techniques such as spray-painted fabric design, visible selvage integration, cut in pockets, architectural elements in the design, use of angles, emphasising inorganic forms to reflect brutalist elements and the incorporation of smaller design details reflecting those seen in famous Brutalist constructions, such as the Barbican Centre.
This required significant technique and material experimentation with a large number of experimental test pieces and concepts being tested before the final outcomes.

From looking at brutalist buildings themselves, to the physical break down of the concrete structures, to now looking at the people who live in this environment. The utopian ideal created by the architects of the Barbican stems from the ideas of living through ‘ideal origination’. Its philosophy of utilitarianism and focus on function resonated with the post war mindset of hope and rebuilding but its imposing aesthetics were frequently criticised as oppressive and alienating.
Looking at how our society mirrors this through a lack of work life balance, burn out, commuting and the push for longer and longer hours each day. This can be seen through clothing by the physical representation of deconstructing formal office attire.
